How to Care and Maintain Your Vinyl Pool Lining

Owners should ensure the proper care for the vinyl pool liner if they want to extend the life of the liner and proper water balance is the key. Below are some tips on how to care for your liner.

Pool Chemicals

Ensuring proper water balance in your pool is critical to maintaining your pool liner. For example with pH below 7.0, the liner can actually grow and develop unsightly wrinkles. High pH greatly accelerates the aging process and shortens the life of the liner. Keeping your pool’s pH level between 7.2 and 7.6 will allow chlorine to kill germs and prevent growth of bacteria.

Free chlorine levels should be between 1.5 and 2.5 ppm. If they are too low, bacteria and algae may grow, staining your liner .Above this range, high concentrations will  bleach your liner and and shorten its life, especially if pH levels are too low.

Water Level

Too low water levels and pressure can cause your pool liner to shrink or change shape. Never lower the water level of the pool to less than two feet of water in the shallow area. Never drain your pool!

Avoid Sharp Objects

Avoid using sharp objects in or around your pool as these can cause punctures or tears in the liner. Good idea to use plastic cups instead and tin bottles instead of glass when enjoying the drinks by the pool.

Prevent Buildup

Dirt and grime can cause a build up around the pool liner. This is known as a “water line” and should be cleaned frequently.  If the dirt line gets baked in, it acts on the vinyl to prematurely dry and crack it.

Prevent Bleaching

Vinyl liners can become bleached if you combine chemicals at high concentrations, so please try to avoid this and use them as directed.  Never let chlorine come in contact with your liner before it is fully dissolved. Granular or tablet chlorine is to be dissolved first in a bucket of water. Liquid chlorine should be poured in various locations around the pool and immediately dispersed and circulated.
